Fashion Week Trinidad and Tobago (FWTT)
Sunday 6th June, 2010.
HAUTE CARIBBEAN
So fashion week in Trinidad has finally ended. The last show was on Sunday 6th June, 2010 and it also happened to be my first show attending FWTT. The overall setting was nice as it was located at the Hyatt Regency. The seating was arranged very orderly but long before, I figured that if I paid $100 for a ticket that I would definitely not be able to see properly. So most of the time I just stood up to get a good look at the models and their ensembles.
However, you could tell that the show was very disorganised. I mean for the final show, you would expect them to get some experience from the the 4 previous days but I guess not!
Firstly, a woman argued to take someone else's seat because she had paid for a Cyan ($300) ticket and had to resort to sitting in the yellow ($100) section for arriving a little late. I agree that the woman deserves what she had paid for, but her attitude was so ridiculous and the usher was like too young to handle the situation.
Another problem, was the line up of the expected shows. Like Calvin Southwell and Mel Simon's collection didn't show. Plus randomly one of the designers, Daronte, came out again after showing his collections to show four extra pieces and then took his strut down the runway for his collection. That just made me go (wtf...look at the program...look back up...look back down...then turn to someone), "Didn't he present his collection already?"
And lastly, what the hull was Buffy and Swappi (two Soca singers) doing winning on the runway and getting on dutty for? Not very appropriate for the setting! Plus, the audio system was horrible and only cracking up which basically ruined that whole performance.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Onto the HAUTE CARIBBEAN fashion shows!
Heather Jones was the first to show her collection for the night. Her line was very colourful and could be described as the rainbow collection because of her strong use of colour (me like). The ensembles were very loosely fitted and draped the models' bodies at times. Very floaty I guess? The popular cut for her collection had to be the cold- shoulder style. However, her collection did have a very attractive puff shouldered sleeve blouse which I must say truly looked amazing. It reminded so much of Jane's pink blouse from the blog, "Sea of Shoes".
Next was Veronica Jones with her crochet line. Nothing really excited me too much, but I really did like the hats that she had made. It looked like a cute coffee shop hat.
Concept Studio (Dexter Jennings) started off their line with a big O-M-G headpiece and gown. I don't if it's the kind of "Omg" that Usher was singing about in his song though. However, I loved the first two dresses that followed. They were long and clearly inspired by the African tribes with the designer's use of tribal patterns and zebra prints. I also adored the headpieces he created. They were very original and were definitely used to describe features of the earth as one looked like a tree with hanging leaves. Also the black and white dressed couples looked amazing! I think that had to be my fav pieces of this collection. Then all of sudden, the collection went down hill and became a quick "Fail!" when the green and black outfits started to roll out. It just looked ewwwie and the material used looked so cheap and omg what were all those hideous ruffles about? Eee!
Daronte (J'von Daronte Smith) followed after. The colour pallet used was beyond boring. The clothes also looked like it was made from cheap materials. However, on a positive note he did cater for the women of Trinidad &Tobago as he had models of all sizes on the runway. P.S. I loved the big mamas :). Oh I did enjoy looking at all the headpieces such as the grey flower. (I think I've admired too much of Carrie Bradshaw's style).
Shurnel Oliverre started off his show with a gorgeous all-white ensemble and the puff sleeved jacket was very haute. The second ensemble had a very interesting collar which splitted like a banana. Yes I just said that, it splitted like a banana lol. The 4th ensemble was very gorg too with it's balloon shouldered sleeve that ruched moving closer to the wrist. You could certainly tell that the designer had a very oriental theme for his collection. Also I loved the geometric approach, which was seen when the red netted garments appeared on the runway. Then there was a pink and black section which I must say looked truly excellent. One thing I loved about this collection is that it followed a theme which made the designer look very professional. Oh and Justine came out as a Geisha for this collection! Eee!
G-Seow Ethnic Bridal (Gladys Louis) was just a FAIL! Enough said.
Shaun Griffith-Perez commenced his collection with a loose and flowing, tie dyed ensemble. Not much to say besides that I saw ruffles and I loved his long white evening gown modelled by Leah-Marie. From the textured material of the garment, you could tell that the evening gown was inspired by the 60's and I enjoyed how the garment played with ruffles at the bottom which then extended to one side of the dress.
Glen (Glen Montes de Oca) played very upbeat African music for his collection which mirrored the garments that were on the runway. I really enjoyed the off-shoulder, green number that brighten the runway. More ruffles?!?!? Sigh... Do Caribbean designers know anything else or were they rushing to get extra pieces. Then as soon as the ruffled outfits entered the runway, the music also changed to a more Spanish vibe too.
Claudia Pegus was the final collection for the night and she started off with a BANG! That bang was the racing hormones of all the women at fashion week when two very good-looking and well-kept (buff-as-ass) men walked down the runway in a military hat and white trousers. And finally! Someone played amazing music for their entire collection. A few words to describe the line- Glitz, Military, Glam and Futuristic.
I absolutely loved her first female ensemble. The model looked like a futuristic cop with her shorts and jacket decked out in black sequins. Claudia also experimented with loose fitted tops that had the back out and ruched jackets. I absolutely hearted the cold shoulder number that was made from a textured fabric and the bras, featured on the runway, looked so hawt! The bras were accesorised by black sequins and gold chains (amazing combo!). Additionally, I found the jacket complemented by the cross pendant very attractive and it reminded me of Madonna from the 80's. Another pleasure, for me, was the blue sequined cold shoulder.
Then came out the section with the two-tone fabric. A lot of the designs were very simple but because of the fabric chosen, it gave the ensembles that WOW factor. And apparently in the future we will be doing our hair in high, twirled buns!
P.S. If you didn't notice already, this was my fav collection for the night.
Oh btw I saw Anya Ayoung Chee ( my fav designer =D=D)!! Did I tell her hi? Hull no! But she did look amazing in her black, military inspired dress.
xoxo,
