Hey chicas and chicos,
It is my honour to introduce to you, Joseph Turvey :). He is a designer at the London College studying for his Masters in Design. I came across his designs while surfing the net for blogs and I happened to have stumbled across his blog page. It was there where I viewed his designs and was intrigued by his posts.
Thus, I decided to interview him (because I learnt from a good friend to just talk a lot and ask many questions:)).
Here are the questions and his answers, and please check out his blog, Francois pas, Flashe' no do
1.) How did you get into design?
A: I have always been designing, i love to draw and doodle. When i started secondary school my textiles teacher encouraged me into taking an early GCSE in textiles. I guess she was the first person who pushed (i use that term lightly) down the design route.
2.) What school did you attend? And why did you select it?
A: I went to Birmingham City University. I chose Birmingham as i wasn't ready to move far away from home... Birmingham is less than an hour away. Plus the reputation of the course kept growing and growing. Two birds one stone...
3.) Okay the infamous question, what inspires you the most when designing a garment?
A: It completely depends on what i have seen or heard that day. The last designs i drew were inspired by the amazing ladies of Grey Gardens. I was completely captivated by them.
4.) Do you like using any particular fabric or pattern to work with?
A: I love leather...which is totally hypocritical of me as i am a hardcore vegetarian! I also love chunky knits... the combination of the two is a match made in heaven.
5.) I saw that you have a lot of male illustrations on your blog but a female collection, which sex do you prefer to design for?
A: Having always designed womenwear during my time at university i thought it would be fun to focus my time on menswear. I am really enjoying the challenge of designing for men...its a totally different experience. In a way it is alot harder...but i think that's why i like it.
6.) For your collection showcased in Grad Fashion Week, what did you want to portray by masking the models?
A: I wanted an army of Margaret Rutherfords (Miss Marple) This was the inspiration for my collection.
7.) So should we expect another collection from you soon?
A: YES! i am about to start my Masters at London College of Fashion. I will be showing a Menswear collection next year.
8.) Do you have any interests in some of the trends circling the fashion globe?
A: I love trend prediction...Searching though every show and finding common trends has to be one of my favorite past times.
9.) Please describe your personal style! ( I don't think I've seen a pic of you, odd lol)
A: Im abit of an H&M junkie. I try to stick to the trends...sometimes i get it right....sometimes i get it very wrong haha! You can find my on facebook if you really want to see! haha
10.) Do you have any favourite closet items?
A: I have an old headscarf from my great Auntie. My nan gave it to me, i have always kept it with me and i love it. PLUS... i own some very nice pairs of shoes. I am abit of a shoeaholic
11.) Which designers inspire you or which ones are on the top of your favourite list?
A: Katie Eary is amazing! Her collections inspire me without a doubt. The same goes for Walter van Beirendonck, Christopher Shannon and Mark Fast.
12.) Do street blogs such as The Sartorialist inspire you as an artist?
A: I like to look at them...but id much rather get out on the street myself and be inspired that way.
13.) Why did you decide to start a blog?
A: At first it was just a place to showcase my work but it has soon turned into an addiction. I love putting a new post together.
14.) Name the first three things that pop into your head. bubbles!
A: Chocolate, Shoes and Sleep
(I hope you're not lying about what you thought just because it's not a face-to-face interview lol)...
He didn't. :)
I hope everyone enjoyed his answers as much as I did :) and it was a pleasure interviwing you, Joe.
xoxo,
